The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel 6 As he bethinkest himself selfsufficient. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
