The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
