The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
