The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 Purify your inner self, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
