Then the twain journeyed until when they embarked in a boat, he scuttled it. Musa said: hast thou scuttled it that thou mayest drown the people thereof? Assuredly thou hast committed a thing grievous. 71 He replied: "Did I not tell thee that thou wilt never be able to have patience with me?" 72 Moses said: 'Do not blame me for what I forgot, nor press me to do something which is too difficult' 73 And so the two went on, till, when they met a young man, [the sage] slew him - [whereupon Moses] exclaimed: "Hast thou slain an innocent human being without [his having taken] another man's life? Indeed, thou hast done a terrible thing!" 74 ۞ Said he, 'Did I not say that thou couldst never bear with me patiently?' 75 [Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse." 76 So they departed; until, when they reached the people of a city, they asked the people for food, but they refused to receive them hospitably. There they found a wall about to tumble down, and so he set it up. He said, 'If thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken a wage for that.' 77 [The sage] replied: "This is the parting of ways between me and thee. [And now] I shall let thee know the real meaning of all [those events] that thou wert unable to bear with patience; 78 As for the boat, it belonged to poor men working in the sea, so I intended to damage it, for there was before them a prince taking every boat by force. 79 And as for the lad, his parents were believers and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief. 80 So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy. 81 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience." 82
