The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
