The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 save those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
