Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
