The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
