A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a good many of later times. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
