Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In gardens and springs. 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
