The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 Their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear God? 124 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 125 Have fear of God and obey me. 126 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 127 You construct monuments on every hill in vain, 128 and make for yourselves mighty castles, [hoping] that you might become immortal? 129 And whenever you apply force become tyrannical. 130 So fear God, and obey me; 131 "Yea, fear Him Who has bestowed on you freely all that ye know. 132 He has given you cattle, children, 133 "And gardens and springs. 134 "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day." 135 They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach; 136 This has been happening all along. 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 Surely, your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 140
