The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
