The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
