The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
