The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 stripping away his skin, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those that pray, 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
