Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 in which you are now living 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
God the Almighty always says the truth.
