Mary (Maryam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. A'in. Sad. 1 AN ACCOUNT of the grace which thy Sustainer bestowed upon His servant Zachariah: 2 Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret. 3 Saying: My Lord! Lo! the bones of me wax feeble and my head is shining with grey hair, and I have never been unblest in prayer to Thee, my Lord. 4 And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, 5 Inheriting me and inheriting the Children of Ya'qub; and make him, my Lord, acceptable! 6 "O Zachariah," (it was) said, "We give you good news of a son by name of John.' To none have We attributed the name before." 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age." 8 He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!" 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Then he came out from the Sanctuary to his nation, and gestured to them to exalt (their Lord) at the dawn and at the evening. 11 (We said:) "O John, hold fast to the Book;" and We gave him wisdom right from boyhood, 12 And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing. 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
