The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 scorching the flesh; 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
