The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant [of God] from praying? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]? 14 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
