The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
