Jonah was certainly a Messenger. 139 When he ran away to a ship completely laden, 140 and cast lots, and was of the rebutted, 141 [and they cast him into the sea,] whereupon the great fish swallowed him, for he had been blameworthy. 142 and had he not been among those who exalt (Allah), 143 He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection. 144 ۞ But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick, 145 And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him; 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded. 147 And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while. 148 Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons. 149 or is it that We have created the angels female, and they [who believe them to be divine] have witnessed [that act of creation]? 150 Pay heed! It is their slander that they say. – 151 'God has begotten a son.' They are certainly liars. 152 (And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons. 153 What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement? 154 Will you not then reflect? 155 Do you have clear authority? 156 “Then bring forth your Book, if you are truthful!” 157 They assert kinship between Him and the angels. But the angels know that they (the liars) will be arraigned (in Hell). 158 Hallowed be Allah from that which they ascribe to Him. 159 Except the bondmen of Allah sincere. 160 So neither you nor those you worship 161 You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him 162 except him who shall roast in Hell. 163 [The angels say], "Every single one of us has his place assigned: 164 "And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service); 165 Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise 166 And indeed they used to say: 167 'If only we had a reminder from the ancients, 168 we would certainly be true servants of God." 169 But (now that the Quran has come) they disbelieve therein (i.e. in the Quran and in Prophet Muhammad SAW, and all that which he brought, the Divine Revelation), so they will come to know! 170 And surely Our word has gone forth respecting Our servants, the messengers: 171 assuredly they shall be helped, 172 and that, verily, Our hosts - they indeed - would [in the end] be victorious! 173 Therefore turn away from them for some time. 174 And see them thou; they themselves shall presently see. 175 Do they seek to hasten on Our Torment? 176 But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)! 177 And turn thou aside from them for a season. 178 And (then) see, for they too shall see. 179 Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! 180 And peace be upon the Envoys; 181 And all praise is due to God alone, the Sustainer of all the worlds! 182
