Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Enter among My servants 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
