The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And your clothing purify 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31

Reading the Quran translated into English, or any other language, is more like reading books of interpretation than reading literal translations.
