Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
