The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
