The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the Mountain, 1 and by the Book in lines 2 on wide-open scrolls. 3 by the much-frequented House, 4 Consider the vault [of heaven] raised high! 5 and by the swelling ocean, 6 verily your Lord's chastisement shall come to pass, 7 No one can avert it. 8 On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion 9 and the mountains move, moving. 10 Then woe that day unto the deniers 11 That play (and paddle) in shallow trifles. 12 The Day when they will be pushed down by force to the Fire of Hell, with a horrible, forceful pushing. 13 (And told:) "This is the fire which you denied. 14 Is this magic? or ye still see not clearly! 15 Taste you therein its heat, and whether you are patient of it or impatient of it, it is all the same. You are only being requited for what you used to do. 16 [But,] verily, the God-conscious will find themselves [on that Day] in gardens and in bliss, 17 rejoicing in all their Lord has given them, and their Lord will guard them against the punishment of Hell. 18 "Eat and drink with happiness because of what you used to do." 19 They would recline on couches set in rows, paired with fair companions (clean of thought and) bright of eye. 20 And those who believed, and whose progeny also followed them in their faith, will be united with their offspring. We will not deprive them of their labour in the least. Every man is bound to what he does. 21 We shall give them fruits and meats, and what they desire. 22 They will pass cups of un-intoxicating and unsinful wine to one another. 23 ۞ And there will go round on them youths appointed to attend them as though they were pearls hidden. 24 And they will advance unto each other asking questions. 25 They say, 'We were before among our people, ever going in fear, 26 but Allah has been gracious to us and has protected us from the punishment of the burning wind. 27 Before, we were supplicating to Him. He is the Giving, the Most Merciful' 28
