The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
