The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it envelops; 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But save him who fears 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
