The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard, 109 who desires to expel you from your land; what do you command?' 110 The others suggested holding Moses and his brother off and sending to all the cities 111 “To bring all the expert magicians to you.” 112 And so the sorcerers came to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). They said: "Indeed there will be a (good) reward for us if we are the victors." 113 He answered: Yes, and surely ye shall be of those brought near (to me). 114 They said: 'Moses, will you throw first or shall we be the throwers' 115 He said: Throw! And when they threw they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and overawed them, and produced a mighty spell. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 they were defeated and turned belittled, 119 And down fell the sorcerers, prostrating themselves 120 saying, "We declare our belief in the Lord of the Universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron' 122 Pharaoh said: 'Do you believe in Him before I permit? This is a plot that you have contrived in the city in order to expel its people from it. Now you shall know! 123 I will cut off your hands and feet on the alternate sides and crucify you all." 124 They answered: "We have (in any case) to go back to our Lord. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
