Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 This is the remembrance of the mercy of your Lord upon His bondman Zakaria. 2 When he cried unto his Lord a cry in secret, 3 And said: "O my Lord, my bones decay, my head is white and hoary, yet in calling You, O Lord, I have never been deprived. 4 "And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir, 5 “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) 6 (Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)." 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age." 8 He (the angel) said, “So it is; your Lord says, ‘This is easy for Me – in fact I created you before this, at a time when you did not exist.’” 9 He said: my Lord appoint for me a sign. Allah said: thy sign is that thou shalt not speak unto mankind for three nights, while sound. 10 So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' 11 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom even as a youth, 12 And compassion from Our presence, and purity; and he was devout, 13 And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
