To Moses we also revealed: 'Set forth with My worshipers by night and strike for them a dry path in the sea. Do not fear that you will be overtaken, neither be afraid' 77 And Firon followed them with his armies, so there came upon them of the sea that which came upon them. 78 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) led his people astray, and he did not guide them. 79 Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy and promised to settle you on the right side of the peaceful Mount Tur (Sinai) and We sent you manna and quails. 80 'Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you; but exceed not therein, or My anger shall alight on you; and on whomsoever My anger alights, that man is hurled to ruin. 81 And lo! verily I am Forgiving toward him who repenteth and believeth and doeth good, and afterward walketh aright. 82 ۞ [AND GOD SAID:] "Now what has caused thee, O Moses, to leave thy people behind in so great a haste?" 83 He replied: "Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to thee, O my Lord, to please thee." 84 He said: So surely We have tried your people after you, and the Samiri has led them astray. 85 With great anger and sorrow, Moses returned to his nation. 'My nation' he said, 'did your Lord not make you a fine promise? Did the time of the covenant seem long to you? Or did you desire that the anger of your Lord should fall upon you so that you failed in your coming to my appointment' 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise with you out of our own volition; but we were laden with the load of people's ornaments, and we simply threw them down(into the fire), and the Samiri also threw down something, 87 and brought out of there (from the molten gold) the effigy of a calf that lowed." The people cried out: "This is your deity and the deity of Moses, whom Moses has forgotten." 88 Could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good? 89
