The chiefs of the people who did not believe and denied the life to come, though We had given them good things of this life to enjoy, (said): "He is only a mortal like you. He eats as you do, and drinks as you drink. 33 If ye were to obey a mortal like yourselves, then, lo! ye surely would be losers. 34 "Does he promise you that when you have died and have become dust and bones, you shall come out alive (resurrected)? 35 ۞ How far-fetched what you are promised; 36 “There is nothing except our life of this world, we die and we live, and we are not to be raised.” 37 He is naught but a man who has forged against God a lie, and we will not believe him.' 38 (The apostle prayed): "O Lord, deliver me, for they accuse me of lies." 39 [And God] would say: "After a little while they will surely be smitten with remorse!" 40 Then the Blast overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead leaves (floating on the stream of Time)! So away with the people who do wrong! 41 Then after them We brought forth other generations. 42 no nation outstrips its term, nor do they put it back. 43 then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time their messenger came to a people, they rejected him. So We destroyed them one after the other, and let them become mere tales. So away with the people who will not believe! 44 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and clear authority 45 to the Pharaoh and his nobles. But they behaved proudly and thought themselves superior people. 46 'What' they said, 'are we to believe in two mortals like us, whose nation are our worshipers' 47 So they denied them, and became of those who were destroyed. 48 And We verily gave Moses the Scripture, that haply they might go aright. 49 And [as We exalted Moses, so, too,] We made the son of Mary and his mother a symbol [of Our grace,] and provided for both an abode in a lofty place of lasting restfulness and unsullied springs. 50
