And recite to them the news of Abraham, 69 When he said to his father and his people: What do you worship? 70 They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them. 71 He asked them, "Can the idols hear you when you pray to them 72 Do they help or harm you?" 73 They replied, "But we found our fathers doing the same." 74 He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping, 75 you, and your elderly fathers? 76 They are enemies to me except the Lord of all the Worlds 77 Who created me and Who guides me; 78 and Himself gives me to eat and drink, 79 "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me; 80 who makes me to die and then revives me, 81 And He Who, I long, shall forgive me my faults, on the Day of Requital. 82 My Lord! Vouchsafe me wisdom and unite me to the righteous. 83 And uphold my name with posterity, 84 And put me among the inheritors of Paradise. 85 and forgive my father, for he was among the astray. 86 and do not put me to shame on the Day when all shall be raised from the dead: 87 The day when neither wealth nor children will be of any avail 88 except him who comes before Allah with a pure heart; 89 And Paradise will be brought close for the pious. 90 whereas the blazing fire will be laid open before those who had been lost in grievous error; 91 and they will be asked: "Where are the gods that you worshipped 92 Beside Allah? Can they succour you or succour themselves? 93 So they and all the astray were flung into hell. 94 And the hosts of Iblis all together. 95 "They will say there in their mutual bickerings: 96 'By Allah, we were certainly in clear error, 97 When we equalled you with the Lord of the worlds. 98 And none but the guilty led us astray; 99 "'Now, then, we have none to intercede (for us), 100 no loyal friend. 101 Would that we might return again, and be among the believers' 102 Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers! 103 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 104
