The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 For this I ask of you no wage, for my wage falls only on the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Do you build monuments on every high place in vanity, 128 And do you take to yourselves underground reservoirs, in order to live for ever! 129 When you lay hands upon anyone, you do so as tyrants. 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know, 132 Hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 And gardens and springs. 134 Verily I fear for you the torment of a Mighty Day. 135 They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach; 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
