Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
