The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
