The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
