The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
