Thamud denied the messengers 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
