The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
