The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think you will be left secure here 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
