The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
