The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
