[AND] the dwellers of the wooded dales [of Madyan] gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 176 when their brother Shu'ayb said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 177 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 178 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 179 I do not ask any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 180 ۞ Fill up the measure, do not be among the cheats, 181 And weigh with a balance straight. 182 And do not wrong men of their things, and do not act corruptly in the earth, making mischief. 183 And guard against (the punishment of) Him who created you and the former nations. 184 They replied, "You are bewitched. 185 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar! 186 So cause thou a fragment of the heaven to fall upon us, if thou art of the truth-tellers. 187 He said: My Lord is Best Aware of what ye do. 188 But they cried him lies; then there seized them the chastisement of the Day of Shadow; assuredly it was the chastisement of a dreadful day. 189 Verily herein is a sign; but most of them are not believers. 190 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 191
