Jonah was certainly a Messenger. 139 Recall what time he ran away unto a laden ship. 140 So he shared (with them), but was of those who are cast off. 141 So the fish swallowed him while he did that for which he blamed himself 142 But had it not been that he was of those who glorify (Us), 143 He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised; 144 ۞ But We cast him, upon the shore, and he was ill, 145 And We made a gourd tree grow over him. 146 We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more, 147 And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time. 148 Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons? 149 Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)? 150 It is only because of their false invention that they say, 151 "God has begotten [a son]"; and verily, they are lying [too, when they say,] 152 Has He chosen daughters over sons? 153 What ails you that you judge in such a wise? 154 Will ye not then receive admonition? 155 Or is there for you a plain authority? 156 Bring your Book, if you speak truly! 157 They assert kinship between Him and the angels. But the angels know that they (the liars) will be arraigned (in Hell). 158 Glory be to Allah (for freedom) from what they describe; 159 Except the bondmen of Allah sincere. 160 So you and your deities 161 cannot mislead anyone 162 except those who are doomed to enter hell. 163 And the angels say, “Each one of us has an appointed known position.” 164 And most surely we are they who draw themselves out in ranks, 165 and, verily, we too extol His limitless glory!" 166 And indeed the disbelievers used to say, – 167 “If we had some advice from the earlier generations,” – 168 "We should certainly have been Servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!" 169 They have rejected the Quran. They will soon know the consequences (of their disbelief). 170 We have already given Our promise to Our Messengers 171 that they shall receive Our help 172 And verily Our host! they are to be overcome. 173 So turn thou aside from them for a season. 174 And see them thou; they themselves shall presently see. 175 What! would they then hasten on Our chastisement? 176 When that chastisement will descend upon their courtyard, evil shall that Day be for those who had been warned. 177 So turn away from them for a while. 178 and see; and they too shall soon see. 179 Glory to thy Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)! 180 And peace be on the apostles. 181 And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds. 182
