THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 yet there was not a sign that We showed them that was not greater than its sister, and We seized them with the punishment so that they might return. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them). 56
