Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
