I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 by the retreating night, 33 and by the day when it dawns (with its radiance), 34 This is but one of the mighty (portents), 35 A warning to mortals, 36 For the one among you who wishes to come forward or stay back. 37 Every soul shall be pledged for what it has earned, 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 In Gardens they will question 40 About the guilty: 41 "What was it that brought you to Hell?" 42 They will reply: 'We were not among those who prayed 43 and we did not feed the poor; 44 And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses. 45 and we cried lies to the Day of Doom, 46 until certainty came upon us [in death]." 47 The intercession of the intercessors shall then be of no avail to them. 48 If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance, 49 As though they were frightened asses 50 fleeing -- before a lion? 51 Rather each one of them desires that he should be given open Books. 52 By no means! Aye, they fear not the Hereafter. 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So, whoever wills may benefit from it. 55 they will only take heed if God so wills: He is the Lord who is worthy to be feared: the Lord of forgiveness. 56
