The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Mount Sinai, 1 and by the Book in lines 2 In an outstretched fine parchment, 3 By the much-frequented Fane; 4 and the roof uplifted 5 And by the Ocean filled with Swell;- 6 surely, the punishment of your Lord is about to come, 7 there is none to prevent it. 8 On the day when the heavens will swiftly fly 9 And the mountains will move away with an awful movement. 10 So woe on that day to those who reject (the truth), 11 Those who sport entering into vain discourses. 12 A day when they will be pushed, forcibly shoved towards the fire of hell. 13 (And it is said unto them): This is the Fire which ye were wont to deny. 14 Is it magic then or do you not see? 15 Taste you therein its heat, and whether you are patient of it or impatient of it, it is all the same. You are only being requited for what you used to do. 16 The pious will live in bountiful Paradise, 17 Enjoying in that which their Lord has bestowed on them, and (the fact that) their Lord saved them from the torment of the blazing Fire. 18 (They will be told): “Eat and drink to your hearts' content as a reward for your deeds.” 19 They will recline on couches arranged in rows and We shall couple them with maidens with large, lovely eyes. 20 And those who believed, and whose progeny also followed them in their faith, will be united with their offspring. We will not deprive them of their labour in the least. Every man is bound to what he does. 21 And We shall increasingly give them fruit and meat such as they desire. 22 They will pass cups of un-intoxicating and unsinful wine to one another. 23 ۞ And they will be waited upon by [immortal] youths, [as if they were children] of their own, [as pure] as if they were pearls hidden in their shells. 24 And some of them draw near to others, questioning. 25 "Before this, when we were among our families, we were full of fear of God's displeasure -- 26 Then Allah graced us with His favour and saved us from the chastisement of the scorching wind. 27 Verily, we did invoke Him [alone] ere this: [and now He has shown us] that He alone is truly benign, a true dispenser of grace!" 28
