The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
